This is one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting Krakow from around the world.
Wieliczka is a small town just next to Krakow, famous for it's UNESCO listed Salt Mine beeing one of the world's oldest salt mines. It's salt deposits were created over 15 million years ago and since the middle ages it was one of the most important parts of Europe's Salt Route leading from the Baltic Sea to Hungary and even further.
The rock salt is naturally grey in various shades, so that the carvings resemble unpolished granite rather than the white or crystalline look that many visitors expect. The miners made all the sculptures, chapels and chambers from salt. It's truly amazing to find such beautiful art underground.
Exceptional St. Anthony's and huge St. Kinga's (the patroness of miners) Chapels, numerous shafts, underground salt lake are just a foretaste of the attractions waiting for you.
A professional, English speaking guide will lead you through all the exhibitions, making sure nobody gets left behind as the whole complex has over 300km of corridors in total.
In the beginning, to get down 64-meters underground, visitors descend a wooden stairway consisting of 378 steps. After the three-kilometer tour of the mine's corridors, chapels, statues and lake, 135 metres underground, visitors get the chance to see the collection of old mining tools and machines. Then they take an elevator back to the surface.
